Modern to Contemporary

Here are some pieces of art ranging from modern to contemporary, starting at the bottom with the rainbow swirl twirl never ending black hole like funnel like tunnel. The simple idea is taken to a whole new level just becuase of the addition of bright colors versus dark and plain white and black. Moving on up to immortatlity or at least what I saw when copying the art to my blog seems like a mix of night and day with it all twisted together. In the middle it looks like grass with a sunny day and blue clouds but the black adds the night at the same time with the the moon. The circular object in my head acts as both the sun and moon and the circles at the bottom of the right corner are the whole art piece just each in smaller circular representations which could mean one life after the next. Next i put some architecture up which is more of a contempoary design similar to Donalds Judd's sculpture of 10 rectangle boxes or at least that's what it reminded me of. Oddly enough the building is a museum of contemporary art in New York. Lastly I specifically found and put up a copy of Eminem's album cover which is a picture of his face so a physical person made up of pills upon pills because its telling a story about his life.

Unit 12 - Photographic Images

For this post I decided to just find the most interesting photo I could find that could be describe the word photography and the amazing things you can do with it. Of course I had to put a sports picture up because I'm a sports managment major, but this is exactly the picture I thought of and wanted to use for this post. Through the use of multiple shots from advances with camera technology we are able to capture every second of action. In the second picture you have a man who is eating himself who is eating himself and eating himself again with a swirl thrown in. The picture is dark and maintains this effect through the mans facial hair/beard. The imagery in the picture is crazy and what they can do nowadays is incredible taking the mind to new levels of creativity.

Unit 11 - Direct Observation vs. Principles of Optics

Here I have posted two drawing I found under direct observations. The first one I specifically searched for and is of Rose in the Titanic when she is getting drawn in a portrait of herself. Since it is a drawing the use of color is not really necessary compared to the painting I have posted which would have no life or energy if not for the blue sky and water. The detail in the portrait features definition in the hands, fingers, face, nose, hair and arms in comparison to the beach painting which i'd consider more of an abstract. The main aspect for this difference would go hand in hand with the title of the unit Direct Observation because the drawing deals literally with directly observing Rose while in the process of creating the work, while the painting came from memory so the deatil is less seen. This also deals with each individual artists' style.

Unit 10 - Architecture & landscape Design

The pictures I decided on can be found in NY at Prospect park in Brookyln that were also designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and said to be his masterpiece even with great desgin of Central park. You can see that Olmsted designed the part to be of great use to the people with precise architectural and landscape design from an enormous man made lake in the middle of Brooklyn, NY to baseball fields to a mile long meadow and preservation of trees to get away from the city life right in the middle of the city. You also have one of the entrances to the park which has a triumphal arch with statues resting on the top and on both sides above the column designs. A great architectural feature to add to a public space for people walking in the area to see everyday

Unit 9 - Landscape in Paint and Perspective Systems

The art pieces I have chosen can show you that landscape adds show much more to the picture. It opens the mind up for more creation and imagination. The are many stories people can create just by looking at the art works above. This is ultimately one of my favorite chapters because we have gotten to explore the mind a little bit with more attention and focus to everything going on with our own in depth anaylsis needed to truly understand the beauty of the art. I wish I could've put the picture I have hanging at home that my grandfather painted of a ship out at sea during a storm because the water adds for great landscape.

Q: For the artist and for the observer, what is the value or importance of creating space in a landscape?

A: The value and importance of creating space in a landscape is to let both the observer and artist use their imagination and memory to place figures in space. The space allows for a story to develop and unveil more than just one outcome. The potential of what is developing is greater when there is more space in the landscape for both the artist to work with and the observer to interpret and think about.

Q: What does a perspective system add to a painted landscape? How does a perspective system achieve the addition?

A: A perspective system depending on the specific type in general adds more detail and makes the painting stand out and different from any other because it’s not just a flat surface painting. You have a three-dimensional feel that has more elements because of all the potential space and landscape. The perspective systems achieve these additions through the use of  space because ultimately it is the artist who decides how much landscape they want/need and through the use of lines as well. The orthogonals or the lines that indicate the top edge or bottom edge of the volume of an object as it moves away from the observer travel to the horizon line.

Q: Compare the visual dynamics, the elements that keep the viewer interested in looking at the work, between the painting by Matisse Joy of Life and the Lorenzetti painting Allegory of Good Government in the City.

A: The visual dynamics that keep the viewer interested in looking at the work in Joy of Life are the colors because the combination of them is unreal and it opens a new world from the start. The landscape goes way back and the clarity is lost when trying to fully understand the painting and story behind it. The loss of definition in the landscape as well as the space allows for many interpretations because there is so much to observe. In Allegory of Good Government in the City we can see that the colors are normal and there is so much more detail and definition to make it realistic and three-dimensional with the use of lines and linear perspective. There is so much going on an even in the background the beautiful architecture in the landscape with people on the rooftops as well. Right in the middle you have a path leading back into the town which I believe to be the most interesting part of the painting because it sets itself apart from everything else in space.

Unit 8 - Sculpture and Earthworks

Here are two art works the top being an earthwork and the bottom being a sculpture. Even though the sculpture is made of legos I still consider it to be art and interesting. The art work makes me think about the human body differently, like "what if?" Even though it is a very simple sculture there is still a rough texture that can been seen as well a a body chest hands finger head and face definitons all from a simple piece of lego. The Earthwork with the soda cans just looked cool and was something I could identify with. The earthworks really sparked my interest when searching for earth art because it just simply is phenomenal i find it so amazing and interesting. Some of the works blow my mind and make me wonder how it got to be that way which enables me to search for its history and learn about it more. Someone once told me "the more interested you become the more interesting you become."

Unit 7 - Narration

Through this piece of art you can see that a women is willing to give her heart to the moon. I don't know what the reason for this is besides the fact that she must love the night time due to some occurence or series of occurences at night that could possibly involve the moon as a light/guide or something that is always there for her at the same time every day. This art work tells a story and depicts night time with a dark sky, the moon, and stars.

This picture is great and I don't even need to explain it or shouldn't have to explain it because everyone in this country I suppose should be able to tell you that this is America's Glorious History at its best right here. You have a sketch paitning of every single president of the United States of America to ever live. It tells a great story of from past to present and tells a story of change.  

Q: Why do artists use stories along with the purely visual information in their art work?

A: Artists use stories with purely visual information in their art work because it adds more to their work. It adds another way for people to really connect with the piece and grasp what the artist is portraying. It keeps the viewer attentive and interested in the piece. Stories are also used to keep record and remember history in order to be able to verbally express the scenario.

Q: Talk about how visual artists who use paint and sculpture can add a specific element of time to their work.

A: Through the use of paintings an sculptures artists can portray the element of time in many different facets. One can portray a sun, moon, stars or colors that represent day light or night time. Time can also be seen in paintings that display a diagram of people in a hierarchal to show that the people on top have the most experience and have been there longer than those at the bottom.

Q: Describe what you might find in an art work that would fall under the term: visual dynamics.

A: In an art work that would be classified as a visual dynamic one would find a lot of detail color, shapes, sizes, contour, translucency all come together forming a multifaceted piece of art that represents some sort of motion/movement

Unit 6 - Light and Shade in Medieval and Renai

Okay so the first picture post I decided is called Hat by none other than Elizabeth Murray. When reading Unit 6 visual art terms I came across her work in a fascinating picture with a window, rain and lots of life and color. Her work is definitely art that I can appreciate because of its uniqueness with how see does not stay flat but rather curves and moves into space allowing for a depth dimension. I really enjoy trying to analyze and interpret her artwork as well as the colors she uses just like in the art piece above.
The second picture I had to choose was of course, The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinvi. Is there a greater painting than this out there? Maybe, because everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but either way this definitely ranks as one of the most illustrious painting known to man because of both the artist and the significance of the painting. You can ver yeasily see the use of light and shade in this picture with shadows and shade along side both ends of the painting and the light attribution in the middle of the painting with the open what I would call doorway and two windows on the back wall in the background. One of my favorites because I have seen it everywhere since I was a little boy.

The most expensive painting to be sold at auction, Pablo Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust," goes on public display in Britain for the first time on Monday at the Tate Modern gallery in London.
The 1932 work, which sold for $106.5 million at Christie's in New York last year, has been lent to the Tate galleries from a private collection and will be on display in a new Pablo Picasso room in the Poetry and Dream section.
"Nude, Green Leaves and Bust is one of the sequence of paintings of Picasso's muse, Marie-Therese Walter, made by the artist at Boisgeloup, Normandy, in the early months of 1932," said Nicholas Serota, the Tate's director.
"They are widely regarded as amongst his greatest achievements of the inter-war period."
Picasso first encountered Walter in 1927, but their relationship had to remain secret from his wife, Olga.
According to the Tate, it was only in 1931-2 that he began to make sculptures and paintings in which the manipulation of Walter's body was explicit and eroticised.
Although Picasso had long disguised his affair with Walter, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust was among the works which openly charted the lovers' obsession with each other.
Before it was sold in May, the work had been in the collection of L.A.-based collectors Sidney and Frances Brody for almost six decades.
They acquired the work in 1951 from Paul Rosenberg & Co., Paris and New York who in turn had acquired it from the artist in 1936. During that period it was exhibited publicly only once, in 1961, to commemorate Picasso's 80th birthday.

Unit 5 - Groups

Group of faces of the cartoons and video characters we all love as children growing up. It's simple art but its a group a faces I liked and wanted to share.


A group of animals of what look to be a horse leading and elephants following carrying objects like statues and naked women in gold cabins. Salvador Dali's work is realism at its finest and Iwould like to not only see more of his art works but read more about his life and the person he was.

Unit 4 - Human Head

Another fantastic and uncanny human head sculpture by Meuck is of a older man resting his head. The scale is rather large as you can tell from the women in the picture but the detail is astonishing making it look lifelike if the woman was not in the picture and your cropped the background out u would never be able to tell it was not a real human being.

ThissSculpture of a deformed human head is on the exterior of the Church of Santa Maria Formosa, Venice. The head has been interpreted as a talisman against the evil eye. It depicts the head of a human thought to be suffering from Proteus syndrome. So it might be set out to be realistic but it not a normal face and what a normal human looks like and seems to have its own style with detail to the lips, teeth and eye sticking out.

Found this one last minute and even though there's a body too it I wanted to post it because its amazing art. Meuck is a one of a kind artist, can't help but notice his baby faces all make the baby out to be older rather than the normal young, cute and innocent.

Unit 3 - Ancient Art

So from the top we have the Colliseum, The spheres of Costa Rica and the egyptians pyrmaids, all of which are part of ancient history and an art to us today. It is amazing how societies so far back in time had the ability to create such spectatcular phenomenas. The colliseum structure is what the norm was was many buildings back in Rome and could be consider their icon. But more so of be an icon are the pyamids of the Egyptians because they are unique and whenever you think or see a pyramid you think of the past Egyptians and their cultures with the pharoahs in power like Rameses.

Unit 2 - Sculptures

When it came to sculptures, which go back so long ago there are millions of sculptures and statues out there in the wolrd today. After searching for what stood out to me I found two amazing sculptures of a beach sand and statue of the one of the Greatest basketball players to ever walk the earth. I hope no one takes offense to the beach one but when I saw it I couldn't believe the texture could every come together to form this- from the black color hair... all the way to the toes.  The scale and proporitonality is unbelievable.

Unit 1 - Contour Lines

My appreciation of art in Unit 1 came when I learned contour line and decided to do some research on what other artists have produced. I found a website with some drawings. I know they are not all exactly what we talked about but I liked them. I posted my favorite above.
